St James The Great Scout Group is open to Catholic boys between the ages of 6-14. It is made up of three sections:
After reaching the age of 14, Scouts can progress to the next level, which is Explorer Scouts, and St James’ Scout Group has strong links with the Explorer Scout Unit, which also meets at St James’, although it is not formally integrated with the Group.
The sections all seek to assist their members to learn to make good use of their time, to enjoy their time as members of the world wide brotherhood of Scouting, learn general citizenship skills and to make new friends. We are a uniformed organisation, and all members are required to equip themselves with a full uniform, appropriate to their section, and to wear it at meetings. An annual subscription charge is made, part of which is used to fund the district and part to help the group buy new equipment. (Special confidential facilities are available for any family that is unable to make the modest financial commitment needed for these items.)
All sections are thriving. In the last year we have made a visit to the top of the HSBC tower in Canary Wharf; been camping on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour (where the first ever Scout camp was held in 1907), and enjoyed a week long camp at Downe Scout Camp site. At Downe, all took part in a range of activities such as quad biking, traversing a high wire, swimming and scuba diving, as well as taking part in talent contests and barbecues, and a host of other activities.
As we are a sponsored Catholic pack, members of all sections are committed to attend the monthly church parade, which takes place at the 11.30am Mass on the second Sunday of each month. Boys wishing to enrol must be Roman Catholics. Many children tend to be pupils of the local primary school, but we are looking to increase membership from beyond this one source.
In this age, when young people suffer from much negative press, Scouting is a good way to have fun, with an emphasis on outdoor activities, good health and eating, and public service, as relevant and exciting today as it was 100 years ago.
